Waters of Uncertainty

Waters of Uncertainty is an ode to the ocean, a homage to the treasures of our Earth. Water being a prime resource, unfortunately often receives too little attention. We as humanity are yet to live in the resolute spirit of sustainability. Water being our lifeblood, each species in marine life plays a unique role in the complex web of life; the loss of even one species can have cascading effects throughout the ecosystem. Conserving and protecting this subtle balance is vital. Healthy ocean ecosystems like coral reefs and mangrove forests act as carbon sinks. By conserving these habitats, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect against dwindling climate change.

Dubai with its beautifully long coastline is home to a variety of marine animals and other creatures that is worth protecting. With all the ongoing efforts to preserve, nourish and nurture this ecosystem, individuals have to take it upon themselves to contribute to this crucial effort. Beyond the present, it’s a legacy for tomorrow, a shared duty to safeguard these treasures.

We are bringing to the limelight what is already present in the hidden waters – a world of its own. Our focus is to highlight life in the waters that need our attention lest we lose our wealth of sea life. Anja Bamberg presents her long interlaced paper tapestry to portray the ebb and tide of life, the waves in the Ocean, and the lifeforms it embraces; a macro dimension. Deepa Gopal, through her small-scale-cluster works in gouache, presents the minuscule world of sea creatures. Dr.Hawa Khan uses the charismatic medium of print to focus on coral reefs and sea turtles. Three distinct styles and mediums to voice the same subject – Waters of Uncertainty, the project spotlights this urgency in championing United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life Below Water.

Artists statements

Capturing the topic WATER has been an essential part of my artistic work over the last 20 years.

My artworks are characterized by the nature and the beauty of the environment transformed into paintings, drawings and sculpture combined with poems. Mixed media techniques are intense for me. I like to weave them into several layers, on different surfaces.

I work on non-traditional painting grounds like paper bags, a recycling material that fascinates me since more than a year.

My goal is to draw attention to the advancing climate crisis, that’s why working with recycling materials and handmade paper characterizes my artistic practice.

Anja Bamberg

My art explores and strives to capture the mesmerizing beauty of the ocean and its minute ecosystems in gouache.

Through my compositions, I aim to captivate and invite the viewer into the awe-inspiring realm of sea creatures. Each brushstroke represents my deep reverence for the countless life forms that call the ocean their home. The versatility of gouache allows me to portray the vivid colors, and the intricate textures provoking viewers to contemplate on the delicate balance.

I hope to instill a passion-for-action and inspire a deeper connection and appreciation for the fragile ecosystems that desperately need to be protected.

Deepa Gopal

My artwork takes a deep dive into the world of coral reef and sea turtle preservation right here in the UAE.

These pieces reflect the essence of these unique ecosystems, prompting us to remember the significance of their conservation.

As we navigate the waters of environmental change, my Lino project serves as a reminder that our actions today will shape the legacy we leave behind for tomorrow.

Let’s ensure the beauty and diversity of the coral reefs and sea turtles continue to thrive in our beloved UAE.
